No Northern Lights on Your Tour?
What happens on an Iceland northern lights tour when the aurora does not appear: the free retry, unlimited retries, rebooking and refunds, tour by tour.
No northern lights tour can promise the aurora, and none on this site does. When a tour runs and the sky stays empty, you do not get your money back: you get another night. Northern Lights Bus gives one free retry, and an open ticket for three years if you leave Iceland before the next tour; Aurora Viking gives unlimited retries until you see the lights. A tour cancelled for weather before it runs is a different case, and that is where refunds come in.
The calendar above is Northern Lights Bus’s tour with hot cocoa, from $85 a person (checked November 2026), with its one free retry.

Why the first night matters
A retry only has value while you are still in Iceland. David The Guide asks guests to book the first night of their trip, so there is time to reschedule if the weather turns. If your first attempt is on your last evening, the bus tour’s fallback becomes the open ticket for a future trip. Book early, then keep one or two later evenings free.

Ran without lights, or cancelled?
These are two different outcomes. A tour that drives out, waits and finds only cloud has run: you get the retry, not a refund. A tour called off before departure for storms or heavy cloud has not run, and the refund or rebooking terms on the listing apply. Some guests argue the line should be drawn earlier: a guest on the small-group tour wrote on 30 October 2026 that the trip should have been cancelled before it started because of heavy cloud. That call is not yours to make, but you can check the Met Office’s cloud map (the forecast) and move your booking while free cancellation still applies, up to 24 hours before.
